Screening, Brief Interventions, and Supporting Families to Make it to Treatment

Our two-part workshop provides practitioners with effective solutions to identify young people who have symptoms of a substance use disorder and then to help them and their families connect with treatment, including adolescents who appear to be resistant to treatment.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

• Utilize common screening tools to screen adolescents for substance use concerns
• Identify young people who are at high- to moderate risk of substance use disorders
• Perform a brief intervention, when appropriate, for youth who are identified as high risk of having a substance use disorder
• Use warm hand-off strategies to both refer and connect young people and their families to substance use treatment providers
• Incorporate CRAFT skills and practices into their work with caregivers of youth who engage in substance use and are resistant to treatment
• Demonstrate and practice integrating SBIRT and CRAFT skills into conversation
