This advanced-level training is designed for clinicians who have foundational knowledge of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and are ready to deepen their practice. Through interactive learning, participants will explore the nuanced application of MI's spirit and core processes-engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning-to support clients in resolving ambivalence and strengthening motivation for change. The training emphasizes recognizing and responding to change talk and sustain talk, managing discord, and applying MI strategies in complex clinical scenarios. Participants will engage in case studies, role plays, and reflective exercises to enhance their confidence and competence in MI-informed conversations.
Objectives:
- Describe key aspects of the spirit of Motivational Interviewing(Partnership, Acceptance, Compassion, Empowerment) and how they guide ethical and effective engagement.
- Apply the four core processes of MI-Engaging, Focusing, Evoking, and Planning-to support client-centered conversations about change.
- Identify and respond to common communication traps and road blocks that contribute to discord and disengagement in clinical interactions.
- Recognize and elicit change talk using strategic MI techniques, including readiness rulers, reflections, and the DARN-CATS framework.
- Demonstrate the ability to respond to sustain talk and discord using MI-consistent strategies such as reframing, affirming autonomy, and collaborative planning.
