This presentation will instruct participants on how to engage and treat adolescents with substance use disorders, and their families, during different stages of change. First, we will approach the pre-contemplative adolescent and discuss how to utilize brief intervention and motivational interviewing strategies to engage the adolescent in an active conversation about their substance use. Next, we will explore psychosocial treatment options, including cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational enhancement therapy, and contingency management. We will discuss medications to treat addiction for adolescents ready to make a change in their substance use, including medications for the treatment of opioid use disorder. Finally, we will explore alternative treatment methods, including group therapy and family engagement.

Objectives:

  • Apply effective brief interventions and motivational interviewing skills to increase motivation for change in adolescents who use substances.
  • Identify evidence-based medications for the treatment of substance use disorders in adolescents, including medications for opioid use disorder.
  • Explore additional treatment strategies for youth, including group and family-based approaches.
