The increasing usage of synthetic stimulants has led to an escalating trend of mortality associated with stimulant use disorders. We will look at the information that the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) has examined regarding evidence-based strategies and standard of care to assist in improving the quality of care for individuals with Stimulant Use Disorder (StUD). This activity will also review the neurobiology and pharmacology of stimulant use disorders to help provide a greater understanding of the harmful medical and psychiatric consequences. Also, the training will discuss evidence-based and practice-informed strategies to address the challenges and strategies of working with individuals: what to observe and what interventions to apply.
Objectives:
- Discuss the changing epidemiology of stimulant use disorder.
- Review the neurobiology and pathophysiology in the development of stimulant use disorder.
- Describe the pharmacological properties of the stimulant drug class, including the unique properties.
- Recognize the acute and chronic effects of stimulants, including the signs and symptoms of intoxication, overdose, dependence, and withdrawal.
- Describe the most common clinical challenges in treating patients with stimulant use disorder, including management of stimulant-induced psychosis.
- Review the current evidence for pharmacological treatment options for stimulant and methamphetamine use disorders.
