Unhealthy alcohol and other drug use are among the most common causes of preventable morbidity and mortality. As healthcare moves to integrate behavioral health services within primary care settings, health care personnel at all levels are called upon to be skilled at screening for and addressing unhealthy substance use. SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention & Referral to Treatment) is a screening and intervention model to identify and address substance use risk. It has strong efficacy for the 20% of the population, nationally, who may use alcohol or drugs in unhealthy ways but who do not meet criteria for a substance use disorder (i.e., abuse, dependence). Research shows that people in this category lower their risk level, using SBIRT methodology. This 6 hour workshop will review the substance abuse continuum, evidence-based research for SBIRT, and components of SBIRT including screening tools, brief interventions and referral protocol.
