Understanding substance use as an adaptive response to nervous system dysregulation, chronic stress, trauma, and/or shame rather than a failure of will or motivation. In many cases, behavior change and insight are not enough, and treatment needs to both intentionally and compassionately address the nervous system and how it impacts the decision cycle through relapse, collapse, or disengagement.

This full-day, in-person training offers substance use treatment providers a polyvagal-informed, somatic, and trauma-responsive framework for understanding and working with SUD. The emphasis will be on regulation, safety, and engagement to support clinicians in responding to common clinical challenges such as resistance, ambivalence, emotional numbing, and relapse. This interactive workshop blends contemporary neuroscience, somatic and contemplative traditions, applied clinical understanding, experiential practices, and case examples to engage learners in understanding, application, and embodiment.
