Training participants prepare to provide psychoeducation on the 8 high-risk situations that may cause a person in recovery to experience a return to use. Define key concepts, explain coping skills needed to prevent disease recurrence, and apply effective strategies to help avoid a return to use.
The eight high-risk situations addressed:
- Negative feelings—anger, guilt, shame, or loneliness.
- Cravings—specific stimuli often trigger these: finding an old stash of liquor, seeing a bar, passing a dealer's house, remembering the taste and smell of a drug, etc.
- Pleasant emotions—contentment, relaxation, or confidence, which can fuel a decision to celebrate by drinking or using drugs.
- Physical discomfort or illness—pain, sleep problems, exhaustion, and severe depression.
- Testing personal control—the belief that "I can handle this one drink" or "A single hit won't hurt me."
- Social pressure to drink or use drugs—encouragement at parties, teasing, etc.
- Having fun with others—using substances to celebrate, loosen up, or enhance experiences.
- Conflict with others—using substances to cope with disagreements or hostile encounters.
By coping with these high-risk situations, clients can learn to manage them.
