Ethics

Overview:
This workshop presents information on frequent ethical issues and dilemmas in child welfare practice. High points related to child welfare in the NASW code of ethics are included, as well as an easy to apply, ethical decision making model. This workshop has a rural social work emphasis in regard to child welfare services delivery.
Presenter:
Karen Fullen, MA, LCSW, is currently the grant program coordinator for the Federal IVE Child Welfare Partnership Grant on the Arkansas State University Campus, Department of Social Work. Mrs. Fullen has worked professionally in the Arkansas child welfare system, both in the private sector as well as the public, for 28 years. She has worked in child welfare as a volunteer, case worker, investigator, manager, in planning and administration, as an agency executive, as a mentor to child welfare workers, and as an educator. Mrs. Fullen has taught a variety of classes in the Social Work Department at ASU, including the course on Ethics. Mrs. Fullen also has experience as a practitioner in the mental health field.

Invisible Disabilities

Overview:
Did you ever meet with a client and wonder, "Did he really understand what I meant to say?" Or maybe get that look from her that asks without words, "What did you say?" This workshop will expand participants’ knowledge of developmental and learning disabilities and explore strategies for more effective communication and more successful intervention.
Learning objectives:
1. Understand how some disabilities can affect both the processing and retention of information.
2. Identify three methods for recognizing when individuals may not have understood you.
3. Learn some new strategies for improving retention of information.
4. Gain understanding of additional considerations to keep in mind when working with a person with a disability.
Presenters:
Betsy Johnson, L.C.S.W. is employed by Partners for Inclusive Communities-UAMS, where she works with the Crime Victims with Disabilities Project. She also works as an instructor at the UALR School of Social Work, and as a counselor at the Arkansas Employee Assistance Program. Prior to joining Partners in 2005 to work as the spina bifida research project coordinator, Betsy worked for 14 years as a counselor for children and families. She is a licensed clinical social worker and a certified life coach.
Roberta Sick, M.Ed.,C.R.C. is employed by Partners for Inclusive Communities-UAMS, where she directs the efforts of the Crime Victims with Disabilities Project. She has been involved in a number of training efforts that address the issues of preventing violence in the lives of people with disabilities and providing access to services. She has a strong working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act, having served for six years as the training coordinator for the Arkansas ADA Roundtable. She is a licensed professional counselor.

Don Beckman, LPC, ACADC, is a licensed Professional Counselor and a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor. He has over thirty years experience in the fields of mental health and substance abuse. He is presently working at Ozark Guidance in Springdale, Arkansas in the Children and Families Outpatient Department.

Inside the Teenage Brain: Implications for Adults Who Work with Teens

This workshop will review information summarizing some of the current research on adolescent brain development. Participants will discuss challenging teenage behaviors and the research-based strategies for reaching and teaching today’s teenagers.

Cathy Hagemeier, MEd, has been a trainer at MidSOUTH Training Center for 10 years. Before coming to MidSOUTH, Cathy worked for DCFS as a Family Service Worker, taught high school biology, and provided instruction/supervision for the Hurricane Island Outward Bound Program for At-Risk Youth.
